Personality:

Simply put, Benihime is a lush who spends a great majority of the time completely intoxicated. Jovial and overly friendly to all, no mercy will be given if you're spotted by this drunkard. An arm will be slipped around your shoulders, you'll be told to take it easy and a tankard will be thrust into your hand. Escape won't be easy.
To most the world she looks like you're average drunk warrior, but for those that see it there's both a deep sadness and a shrewd cleverness buried deep in her eyes. She pays attention to the world around her far more than she lets on, and offers sage advice for those that would wish it, as one who has loved, lost, and fought during the war. She takes a particular shine to those on quests of vengeance, since they remind her so strongly of herself in her foolish youth.
Regardless of your perception of her, she can be found living life to the fullest, eager to see what tomorrow brings. Possibly to see if the bar is stocking different brands of alcohol, or perhaps something deeper. It's usually one or the other with Beni.

Likes:

  • Alcohol
  • The way your voice echoes when you speak into a bottle
  • Street performers
  • Alcohol
  • Battered fish
  • Gossip
  • Alcohol
  • Eavesdropping
  • Fortune telling
  • Alcohol

Dislikes:

  • Serious people
  • Being thrown out of bars
  • People disregarding her stupid superstitions
  • Waking up
  • Tight kimonos
  • Nobody laughing at her jokes
  • Expensive food (too rich for her tastes)

History:

"A man I admired once said you should dig two graves before embarking on a journey of revenge...
If only I'd known sooner how right he was."

Born during a particularly harsh winter, Benihime was the little miracle child to her family, the first female in a family of 4 hardy fishermen brothers. As such, it wasn't long before she was out hauling and catching fish among them, getting bigger and stronger everyday.

The war between Hosido and Nohr was a faraway thing for the fisher folk of the village. Skirmishes and reports always made the gossip rounds, but when they dried up the rumour mill was content with the romantic outings of the local girls. Beni often indulged in the gossip but that subject was just as far from her as the war was. She was seldom asked for dances during the festivals and kimonos rarely fit her tall, muscular body. Eventually Beni learned to take pride in her strength, and accepted the inevitably of not being asked.

Or that's what she thought. A chance encounter delivering sake for the upcoming kindling festival and there he was. Writing poetry, bedridden. His name was Nao and he'd been suffering from a disease since birth, rarely leaving the house.
And Benihime for the first time, fell hard. Despite being 25 at this point, she was a school girl in love and she found every excuse to meet him. It was a confession of them both admitting that they'd never thought that they'd know love, let alone marriage that put finality to their relationship. They were happily wed that same week.

And marriage was everything she never knew she wanted. Sure, Nao's illness did make things difficult but it was nothing Beni couldn't handle. He required medicine every month from the local village to keep his condition stable, but it was a duty she took pride in as his wife. Together, anything was possible - that was the sacred power and bond of their marriage.

The troubles began as the war grew more intense. Village samurai and warriors were forced to abandon posts in order to join the battlefront. While the direct effects of the war hadn't affected them, the absence of the samurai did. Gangs of opportunistic bandits began to appear, and rather than stalk the unprotected roads, they boldly demanded tributes of villages and ransacked those that did not. As the rumours grew more frightening the fishermen steeled themselves for the impending conflict.
When the bandits tried to enter the village they were fought off with sharpened farming tools and clubs and angered by this defiance, the bandits camped in the forest that surrounded the outskirts of the village.
They were waiting for a different raiding party to join them and burn the village to the ground. Despite her strength, Benihime had selfishly ignored much of this to be beside her husband - until now. The forest was a deathtrap for those hoping to leave, and their boats were not meant for sailing. The end of the month approached - Nao needed his medicine.

She tried again and again to get through the forest, each time assuring the steadily worsening Nao she would make it through next time. She memorized their positions, switch overs, went alone, convinced others to come with her. But nothing worked. One night she begged them to let her through, and they shot an arrow which lodged in her shoulder. When she eventually limped her way back, it was dawn. Without anyone telling her she somehow knew it was too late. Her husband was gone.
She'd watched as the life had slowly drained from him over the course of these days.
And before she knew it Benihime was overflowing with intense hatred, and loathing.

With nothing to lose Benihime gathered up everyone she could and convinced them slaughtering the bandits was their only chance. Benihime lost all feeling as she ruthlessly murdered the bandits with whatever weapon she could lay her hands on. And once they'd destroyed the ones camping in the forest she convinced the village recruits to hunt the rest of the bandits stalking nearby villages - that they'd have no peace until they did. And so they did.
But it still wasn't enough. The hatred wouldn't go away. Someone needed to be blamed for all this. And she eventually realized it was the war - more specifically Nohr. If there was no war the bandits wouldn't have had the oppurtunity.

She returned to the village only once for Nao's funeral. He was buried with the medicine she'd finally gotten. She thought it would give her peace of mind, but it did not. After that she joined the Hoshidan army and life became a blur of bloodshed for many, many years. One battle she killed a Nohrian man whose eyes so resembled her beloved - and she thought to herself, "surely now, this is enough."
And she finally put down her sword, and left the military.

And for the first time in years she let go of her hatred, and went on a journey of self-reflection. Finally advice she'd been given years ago about the pointlessness of revenge made sense and she realized that both Nohr and Hoshido villagers suffer equally from misfortune. She embraced the world around her and indulged in drink as a way of burying that other self deep away.
Benihime mellowed out over time, her drinking habits growing worse (and her reputations in bars, steadily more worse) but finally she'd turned a new leaf in her life.

Oneday, freshly thrown out of a bar Benihime dusts herself off and hears a town crier begging for new recruits. Remembering all the people she fought beside all those years ago, she decides to join the army once more, as a fresh recruit.
She couldn't believe how close minded she'd been all those years ago. She could be the mentor to those that needed it, like so many were for her. Or maybe not. At least it was a free bed and food.

It beat being thrown out of another bar, anyway.

TLDR: A muscular fisher-woman who married a sickly man named Nao after a chance meeting. Because of the war between Nohr and Hoshido, bandits in Hoshido get more bold and demand the treasures and supplies of her village. With their superior numbers, the bandits surround the village, preventing all from leaving. Nao dies as Beni can't leave to get his medicine, and filled with rage, she rally's the able villagers and together they kill the bandits. She blames Nohr for the bandit attacks and joins the army, her blood lust not sated. After years in the service the killing begins to feel pointless and she leaves for a journey of self-evaluation. Indulging in the pleasures of life, especially alcohol, she finds peace with herself and joins the army once again, this time to mentor those who may lose their way like she did.

Battle Quotes:

>> Critical Hit
  "Whoops! My hand slipped~!"
  "Blink and you'll miss it~"
  "Warm-up's over, kid!"
  "You dropped your guard, kid!"

>> Victorious
  "I'll drink to that!"
  "Fufu, that was kinda fun."
"With age comes... eh, I forget the rest."
"Never too early to start drinking~"

>> Supporting
"Need Beni to show you how it's done?"
  "Let's see your moves."
  "Ooh, this should be good."

>> Death/Retreat
"Nao... "I can almost ... see your face..."
  "W-hoa! My tankard's empty...?! That's my queue!"

Trivia:

  • Besides poetry her husband also had a tsuchibue which he played during long nights. Inheriting it, she has also picked up this habit and will especially play the night before a battle.
  • She's a very private person regarding the details of her husband and the revenge she sought for his death. She'll speak of him yes, but never the details.
  • She learned to meditate while on her journey of self-reflection. It might look like she's sleeping, but really ... you have to look closely, she might actually be sleeping.
  • Calls most people 'kid' and treats them as such, often supplying them with hair ruffles and hearty slaps on the back.
  • Treats the elderly with the highest regard, with bows and offers to carry them places.
  • Fascinated to hear from those with great academic knowledge since she's high on world experience instead.
  • Despite always being drunk, she never seems hungover. It's truly a miracle.

OH MAN OH MAN SHE IS SO GORGEOUS! And aaaah, her personality has so much depth / H \ I love how she is a character who has kind of gotten past the most tragic and tumultuous traumas of her youth, but still has growing to do, and fresh memories to make. What a wonderful character!
